Augustus (51) Schermerhorn Emmet , the youngest grandchild of TAE and the youngest child of Laura M Coster and William Colville Emmet, was born in New York City on May 23rd, 1860.
He attended Columbia and graduated from the School of Mines in 1883 while living with his parents at 30 West 49th Street. He does not seem to have worked outside New York City or entered a mine; his main focus was real estate - buying, renting and selling property and buildings. He never hesitated to go to court to sue for unpaid fees and/or promised down payments, but otherwise he is largely absent from public records. Some of his transactions are noted in the "Real Estate Record and Builders Guide" between 1886 and 1920.
In the mid-1920s, when in his 60s, Augustus moved to England, buying a 17th C. house called "Furlong House" near the village of Chagford in Devon, overlooking the Dartmoor National Park "Furlong House" is described as a classically proportioned and elegant Georgian house with a view of Dartmoor. He lived, gardened and walked about this beautiful area for over 20 years before dying there on Oct. 31, 1952 at the age 92.
