Herman (50) LeRoy Emmet was the 9th son born to Laura Magdelena Coster and William Colville (11) Emmet. Unlike his numerous brothers, he seems to have been born in Hyde Park, NY rather than New York City - the date being Oct 20, 1850. No educational institutions have claimed him - perhaps he went right to work when he became an adult. He was living in New Rochelle, NY with his parents at the time of his marriage in the City on Dec 2, 1885 at the age of 35. His occupation is variously listed as a printer and as a publisher.
The sad part about his life is that he and his wife Alice Wellington Johnson had only one child - a boy named after his father, who died at the age of 19 months and one day in New York. The couple spent a lot of time in Tuxedo Park and belonged to various clubs there and in the City. Alice's father, Hezron Ayers Johnson died some 6 years after Alice and Herman married, and, according to the newspapers of the day, left his widow and children "a substantial fortune," which may have reduced the need for Herman to spend a lot of time at an office.
Alice and Herman both died in Tuxedo - he of pneumonia on May 15, 1923, and she 13 years later on July 21, 1936; they are buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, along with their baby.
